Dreams of Stardom

In 1974 a man by the name of Mel Greenberg came to Lexington, Virginia promising to make a movie. In response the town clamored to get a role in this movie he was making, everyone harboring dreams of making it big in show business. This was not be, for this man's promises of fame were little more than a daydream, as the people of Lexington would come find out.

In 1974 on a dreary day in Lexington, VA a stranger wandered into to town. His name was Mel Greenberg. He was, by all appearances, a director. Soon he began making promises about filming a movie in Lexington; it was to be a Civil War movie. Before long the citizens of the town grew enthralled by his promises of fame and stardom, and large throngs of people were gathering around this man hoping to that he might hold the key to making all their dreams a reality. They were wrong.

During his stay in Lexington he mostly frequented the Keydet-General hotel. It was in his room, Room # 30, that he held the auditions for the "parts" he was offering people. The auditions ranged from people performing legitimate acting pieces to singing to women displaying their "endowment". Surprisingly there were a large number of women available who were more than willing to bear their bodies, especially when he was offering rates as high as $12,000 for those parts alone. It got to the point where there were around 500 people waiting outside his door for a chance to audition.

Ultimately though all of his promises were for nought, for eventually he simply disappeared with the money that had been granted him by the grace of some of the towns folk. Fortunately he was eventually captured in Ohio, once again looking to solicit the creation of a fake movie, and taken to court for his massive deception; however, surprisingly there were quite a few people who bore no ill will against the man but, in fact, desired that he be freed. I suppose they considered the hopeful display he put up compensation for deceiving them all with lies.
